December 2013 Square Dances

Dec. 13th (Friday night) - Christmas Potluck and Dance! George Hermann will be calling the squares (7:30 starts with plus and changes to mainstream at 8 pm) and Christina Corelli will be cueing the rounds. We will have door prizes and a split-the-pot for this festive dance.

The potluck will be at 6:30 pm with ham and rolls provided by our club.  If everyone who attends can bring a potluck dish to share, that will be wonderful. We'll need salads, veggies, and potato, noodle, or rice dishes to round out the meal. Cold veggies and dips are also good. Desserts and finger foods will be good for the break, later in the dance. (Come by 6:20 pm to bring the food for the potluck so we can finish setting up.)
Holiday dance 2012
George Hermann has called for us for the last few Christmas dances we've had and always has lots of holiday songs.  Christina Corelli will dazzle us with her Christmas dance selections and keep us happily twirlling through the evening.

Dec. 27th (Friday night) - New Year's Resolution dance with KC Curtis calling the square dance tips and NancyAnn Nobles cueing the rounds. Plus starts at 7:30 pm, mainstream and rounds at 8:00 pm. See you there!

November 2013 Dances

Nov. 8th: Veterans Remembrance Day Dance
Terry Halley is our caller for the evening. As most of you know, Terry also calls with "the Wild Cards" and at local festivals and for other clubs and has a really good singing voice and great patter.

Sandra Pinion is our cure for the evening and will cue level 2 rounds as well as intermediate rounds interspersed throughout the evening and at the beginning of break time.

We are still accepting cans of food and donations for Food for Lane County. Come fill the barrel!

Nov. 22nd: Western Roundup and Chilli Feed
Bruce Lowther will be calling this dance. He makes us MOVE!  When selecting his music, Bruce likes faster, up tempo music (foot tappers) and gravitates to pop country, vintage rock’n roll, Latin songs, and musicals. From 2001-07 Lowther called for the Silver City Squares in Silverton, Oregon. The Albany Timber Twirlers were blessed when he started calling for them in 2003 and he still calls for them and the Silver Spinners.  He is a member of the Capital Callers and Cuers Association and has been a member of Callerlab since 1995.

Sharon Greenman will be our cuer for the evening.  She cues for other local clubs in our area and I'm sure you've all round danced to the catchy tunes she spins. She started Square Dancing in 1979, then began cueing for Round Dances in 1989. She is a member of Roundalab, the International association of Round Dance Cuers;  Oregon Round Dance Teachers Association;  and the Cascade Callers and Cuers Association. She has cued for many clubs through the years and currently for the Oregon Timber Twirlers in Albany, and Whirl-a-Ways in Eugene/Springfield, Oregon.

October Dances 2013

From Sept 2013 Sock Hop
11th - Mike Halley will be calling and Helen Halley will be our cuer for the evening for our Octoberfest Food Drive for Food for Lane County.  Bring your cans for the food barrel or cash or check donations for "Food for Lane County" are also appreciated. Mike will get you laughing and moving to the beat.

Enjoying round dance
25th - Renee Ruud will be our caller and Christina Corelli will be the cuer for the evening for our Halloween Dance.  As a special treat - Christina will cue intermediate rounds before the main dance starting at 7 pm. Costumes are welcome and encouraged.  Last year we gave prizes for some of the best costumes - we may do this again. Here's hoping we have a chorus of "the Mash - the Monster Mash." With Renee, a fun caller with a very good voice, and our special Danebo  friend, Christina, as our cuer - we will have a twosome candy of a Halloween treat.

September dances 2013

Sept. 27th:
Craig Abercrombie is back and bringing a guest - caller Al Frazier from Texas. Al started calling in 1990 and calls for three clubs in the Austin area. He has recorded on Red Boot Label and Alliance Records. And Craig is a household word in the square dance world in Oregon and beyond. Both callers are also recording artists for Rawhide Records. This is going to be a treat - two great callers in the same night! Who could ask for more. Ah, yes, Craig will also be cuing for the round dancers - so that is more.

August dances (updated)

On August 23rd - KC Curtis will be calling squares, and for our round dancing pleasure from his home club, the Toe Dragger's cuer, Bev Flint. We're still in casual attire for this last dance of summer, or square dance outfits if you prefer. Members, please remember to bring finger food as always.

July 31st - Round Dance Party

All level Round Dance Party with Christine Corelli-Goode from 6 pm to 8 pm. The usually cost is $5 but the beginning waltz class members will be free since she doesn't think it is fair to charge if someone can just dance one phase and one rhythm.  Also, if you only know Two Step, phase 2 and nothing else, you are also free. So that's really nice.  So all you beginners and everyone else as well, come and fill the dance floor.

There will be a Split-the-Pot, too.  And bring treats if you'd like.  Christine will have some there, too.

An as an aside - if you want to learn to  do the Two-Step  - her class will begin Sept. 9th at 7 pm at the hall.

Square Dancing for Exercise and the Mind

1) It is a great way to exercise and it is lots of fun to boot.  Square Dancing is endorsed  by the American Heart Association.  In a typical dance you will walk 3-5 miles if you keep going the whole time.

2) Square Dancing has also been endorsed by the Alzheimer’s Association because it keeps your mind sharp. Lessons start with 50 different calls and get up to about 68.  If you want to stretch yourself further, you go for the plus lessons, eventually, and learn about 30 more calls.

3) Square dancing costs a lot less than a health club, and it doesn't feel like work!

4) I’ll bet that you didn't  know that you can square dance to just about any type of music.  We’re talking, Rock, Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Classical, Gospel.  Frankly all you need is a beat to move your feet to.

5) We have a saying around square dancing that it is good for ages 8-98.  Younger then age 8 you get into a problem with memory retention.  :-)

Many thanks to a square dance friend for some of this obvious information.

Honor Flight Dance did well

Many Single Trees and other clubs attended the fundraiser for the WW II Honor Flight fund sponsored by the Whirl-A-Ways. More than $2500 was raised between donations and  the silent auction. Some of our club members were glad to be able to contribute as well. Fun was had by all.

This was also a Single Trees visitation (there sure were a lot of us - see photo below) to the Whirl-A-Ways Hawaiian themed square dance in June - their last for the summer - honored their caller for several years, Bob Ewing (far left in front row), who is moving on to embrace other interests.  He is calling for Single Trees on July 12th - so come on down!  (And thanks to Lois for the great photos.)

June-July 2013 Dances

Bob Ewing
June 14th is our Annual Reigning Cats & Dogs theme dance, a fund-raiser for Greenhill Humane Society.  Bob Ewing will be our caller for the night, and Nancyann Nobles will be our guest cuer. So come on out, have a lot of fun dancing, and give your support to Greenhill. We start with plus at 7:30 pm, and mainstream and rounds at 8:00 pm. And of course, there are always yummy snacks at the break.

Sandy Harris
June 28th is our Yard & Garden Party theme dance which is a casual attire dance. Of course, square dance clothes are fine, too. Our caller for the evening is Scott Zinser, and Sandy Harris will be our guest cuer. Dance times are the same as always.

July 12th is our Watermelon Dance, and you can be sure there will be watermelons! Bob Ewing will be calling for us again, and Sharon Greenman will be our cuer for the evening.

July 26th the club will be dark since it is the weekend for the Diamond Lake event.

"The Crew" at the ESDC was a wonderful dance!

Wonderful dance on June 2nd, "The Crew" Daryl Clendenin, Randy Dibble, Jim Hattrick and Les Seeley at the ESDC on Sunday afternoon. There was round dancing between tips, cued by Yvonne Clendenin. Dancers from many clubs were there with 11 squares on the floor.  It was a jam-packed house, for sure and everyone had a lot of fun.

April 2013 Dances

KC Curtis

12th - Suspenders and Crazy T-shirt dance - caller KC Curtis, one of our favorites.  He can sing up a storm and always keeps you moving. He'll rock your socks off.

Give your crazy t-shirts an outing and take them dancing! And if you have suspenders - snap 'em on and bring them along too. Plus starts at 7:30 p.m. and mainstream and rounds at 8:00 p.m. Remember to bring your finger foods because we'll all be hungry come that mid-dance break time.

Dan Nordbye

16th - Tuesday - Special dance hosted by Danebo Circle 8 - DAN NORDBYE, national caller from Mesa, Arizona. This dance is always FUN!  Dan is a wonderful caller and a hoot to boot, says Christina Corelli. Rounds (7:30 p.m. pre rounds) will be mixed levels, so something for everyone. (This dance is $7 per person.) Let's everyone in the Emerald Valley  get out for this one and support square dancing and have a great time! For more information about Dan - go to his website and hear him call.   http://www.dannordbye.com

Renee & Gary Ruud
26th - caller - Renee Ruud who will dazzle us with flower-studded dances to highlight our spring season. Her singing is real fine and her calling skills just keep improving. We might even have a mystery visitor to help her out - but since it is a mystery - we won't know until all begins at 7:30 p.m. with plus calls. Mainstream begins at 8:00 p.m. with rounds interspersed, as always. As for finger foods, sounds like a good dance for fruit and nuts, being spring - but there is always room for cake.  See you then.

March 19, 2013

March 22nd, 2013 Square Dance

March 22nd - Gospel Dance with caller George Hermann who called for our Christmas holiday dance in December. Gospel tunes are one of his favorites, so you are in for a treat. He will be doing patter as well as singing calls with other tunes mixed in.

And remember - plus starts at 7:30 p.m., rounds and mainstream at 8:00 p.m. We usually have a break for goodies at 9:15 p.m. So come and have a good time.

Pat Hintz will be our round dance cuer as usual. So get your jive, cha cha, waltz and two-step on and have a swinging good time.

And remember to bring your finger food so we can all enjoy refreshments with our guests. See you on the floor - dancing of course!

February Dances 2013

Feb. 8th the Wild Cards will be calling for our Sweetheart of a 49th Birthday Dance.  Don’t miss it!  We start plus at 7:30 pm, followed by rounds and mainstream from 8 pm to 10:30.
The Wild Cards are three very good singers and do great harmony: Terry Halley, KC Curtis, and Mike Halley.  This will be a very fun evening. And of course - there will be cake. We had a great group attending last year's dance as you can see in the photo.

Feb. 22nd is the OFN Subscription dance with Craig Abercrombie calling. Those renewing or starting a new membership subscription will get in the dance free. Craig always calls a good dance - so support the OFN with your subscription.  If we get enough subscriptions and renewals, I think Single Trees will get a free ad in the OFN. And as always, bring your finger food. Dances are always at 7:30 pm starting with plus, and 8 pm to 10:30 with rounds and mainstream.

January 11, 2013 - New Dancer Dance with Bruce Lowther

Come support our new dancers for this fun evening with Bruce Lowther calling.  He makes us MOVE!  When selecting his music, Bruce likes faster, up tempo music (foot tappers) and gravitates to pop country, vintage rock’n roll, Latin songs, and musicals.  Dancing starts at 7:30 pm at the Emerald Square Dance Center, Springfield, in Hall A.
